Salient features of Department
- The Department of Electrical Engineering was established in the year 1984 with an undergraduate programme titled ‘B.E. (Electrical Engineering)’. Subsequently, the post-graduate programme titled ‘M.Tech.(Power Electronics and Power System)’ was started in the academic year 2010-11. The National Board of Accreditation has accredited the UG programme five times in succession in the years 2001, 2006, 2012, 2017 and 2020. Since 2012, the Electrical Engineering Department is also recognized as a ‘Place for Higher Learning and Research’ by R.T.M. Nagpur University which leads to the Doctoral programme.
- The curricula of both UG and PG programmes are designed and updated in consultation with peers from IITS/NITs, experts from Industry and our illustrious Alumni. Currently, we have revamped the UG curriculum in line with National Education Policy NEP-2020 which provides the students many innovative flexibilities like freedom to design the degree programme by selection of courses, freedom to opt for credit mobility, freedom of multiple exits after every year of the 4-year programme, freedom of multiple entry, freedom to switch on alternative modes of learning and freedom to nurture the individual likings/talents by studying credit courses belonging to Indian and Foreign languages, liberal arts, skill development courses etc. The department has ergonomically furnished classrooms and fourteen well-equipped laboratories that include the PLC Lab., HV Lab. Research Lab., Project Lab., Computer Lab., Power Electronics Lab., Drives Lab., IoT Applications Lab., and others. In addition, we also have a Centre of Excellence named ‘Energy Research Centre’ where the UG, PG, PhD students and faculty members carry out their research work.
- The department has thirteen well-qualified and experienced faculty members out of which ten have completed their PhD and two are pursuing. In addition, we have one Adjunct Faculty Member who has a long industrial and entrepreneurial experience. These faculty members have many research publications, research grants and patents to their credit.
- To promote the overall development of students, the department has two student administered societies as (i) IEEE Student Jt. Chapter of Power Electronics and Industrial Electronics Societies and (ii) Electrical Engineering Students Association (EESA). The students of Electrical Engineering department actively participate in various activities: conferences, other technical events, co-curricular, extra-curricular, sports and represent the college at various levels. In addition, they also organize events to contribute for the social cause and join the National Service Scheme (NSS) activities. The department organizes Seminars, Guest lectures, Training programmes, industry visits and Product exhibitions for the students. To introduce the graduating students to the current developments in industry, the department organizes an Industrial Product Exposition named “EMPOWER”. So far, this mega event was successively organized in the years 2012, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2023. Reputed companies namely ABB, Artic Infra Tech, Grandstream, Grundfos, Hager, Hioki, KEI Cables, L&T, Powerica, Wipro, Bergen, Biosys, HP, Rockwell Automation, Schneider, Siemens, Crompton, Texas Instruments, Finolex, Highrise Transformers, TDK, Waree, Goenka Switchgear, Baaz Bikes (ElecTorq Technologies), Gentech, Synergy, VSP Aqua Mist, D.V. Associates etc. participated in the exhibition with the wide range of products to display. The department also has an active Entrepreneur Development Cell to develop the entrepreneurial skills among the students.
Career Prospects
- Electrical energy is required extensively for domestic and industrial use. Thus, opportunities for electrical engineers are wide open in various fields. They can find employment in industries related to various sectors that include Major core, Automobile, Electric Vehicle, Automation, Consumer goods sector, Power Stations, Electricity Transmission & Distribution utilities, Manufacturing plants, Plant Engineering, Industrial design & maintenance and many others.
- The curriculum is so design that the graduates can also opt to join IT/Software industries as a career option. The on-campus placement of Electrical Engineering graduates during the last couple of years has been more than 75% every year. In 2022, it reached the highest of 96%. Many others succeed in competitive exams and go for higher studies. The freedom to select ‘Start-up’ as a curricular option during VIII Semester and the support provided by our Technology Business Incubation Centre (TBI) has been very helpful to the students who wish to become entrepreneurs.
