The Department of Humanities is working to achieve the vision of creating effective communicators and socially responsible engineers and has thus developed various courses to enhance communication and employability skills of the students along with strong human values. It also mentors various extra-curricular activities to achieve the same goal. The Department teaches wide range of courses including English, Constitution of India, Engineering and Managerial Economics, Psychology, Education Technology, Ornithology, Technical Communication, Business Communication and many other courses to students of undergraduate as well as post-graduate programmes.

The Department has a digitized English Language Lab which has practical session on public speaking, presentation skills, interview techniques, group discussions and other related aspects of developing effective communication skills. As part of its good practises these lab sessions provide scope for peer evaluation which helps students develop skills such as observation, assessment, and objective thinking.

The Department offers 22 open electives which include courses on Indian traditional Knowledge, Indian languages like Sanskrit, foreign languages such as German, Japanese, and Spanish. The Department also offers two Minor specializations in Economics and Applied Psychology. In line with the National Education Policy 2020, many valued added and open electives courses are offered by the Department in performing and visual arts such as Indian classical dance forms, theatre, photography, etc. This is in addition to many other Liberal Arts courses.

Faculty members of the Department have specializations in English Literature and Language, Economics, Environmental Economics, Linguistics, German, Psychology, History, Sociology, Political Science, Public Administration, Education and Human Resource Management. The Department also undertakes Faculty Development Programmes to enhance communication skill of faculty members of other departments.

Four of the faculty members have Ph.Ds. The faculty have an average teaching experience of 14 years. Two of the faculty members are recognized Ph.D. supervisors. They have more than nine years of research experience in rural development and international training in environment management-specific research methodology. They have many publications in national and international journals, chapters in edited books, have authored many books, and have numerous national and international conference paper presentations. The faculty members are also invited as resource persons for sessions on human resource development, academic and technical writing, communication skills, environment conservation, and are involved in various literary activities.

The Department is committed to enrich the personalities of the students by providing them opportunities for co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. These activities help to develop or enhance generic skills such as team work, public speaking/convincing, leadership/managing people, conflict-resolution, innovation, creativity, time-management as well as spirit of volunteerism.

In order to sensitize the students about need for environmental conservation, the Department founded the environmental club of RCOEM, REEF (Shri Ramdeobaba College of Engineers for Environment Forum), in 2012. REEF won Wipro’s international Earthian Award 2015 along with its mentor faculty and won a cash prize of Rs. 1,50,000. The club undertakes various activities throughout the year (now under the mentorship of a faculty from Dept. of Chemistry).

In order to promote literary activities, the Department established Reader’s Reverie in 2014 which eventually collaborated with SRC to form the Readers’ Reverie Literary Club. ‘Speak Out Loud’, ‘Aalekh’ and ‘Youth Parliament’ are the prominent annual activities of the club. Besides this, the club arranges many activities such as debates, elocutions, quiz, creative writing, essay writing, story-telling, interviews with budding writers and so on. The Department is also keen to promote cultural consciousness among students, thus the Drama Club of the College is also mentored by the faculty of the Department of Humanities.
